Let’s Talk About It—Blog 1

I am baaaaack! I'm very excited to write for the second season of my blog, Let's Talk About It. I love having the opportunity to express my thoughts and feelings on current events, social justice and well anything that I notice! In light of my first post back, there's nothing more fitting than talking about the First Amendment (hence me blogging)!

The current political climate has again made me realize that people truly are misinformed about what it means to have the freedom of speech. I've heard the argument that people are allowed to say whatever they want so it's unfair that people receive sanctions for comments on minorities, women and other oppressed demographics . I have a hard time buying into that theory. It's true we live in a country that says we have the freedom of speech, but that is not the same as freedom of speech with no consequences! People can say whatever and expressed whatever they may be feeling but that doesn't mean people are going to like it, especially if it's offensive. I don't know why freedom of speech has been twisted into this silly notion of you can say whatever you want, be offensive, oppress people, be derogatory and nothing will happen. That is simply not true. Remember you can get fired from jobs from what you say and post! I truly believe a large part of society is mis-informed about their rights! Does freedom of speech equal freedom from consequences?
